I am searching for something that sounds better than “the sales work” for säljarbetet. This is of course what a salesperson does, work to make sales, but “sales work” sounds a bit stilted.

Makes a difference to have the whole sentence. I would not use "sales efforts at all, but something like:"

An effective sales operation requires planning.
Effectives sales require skilled negotiations

Don't Scandinavians just love 'arbet/arbejde' in contexts where 'work' in English is flat or inappropriate!
