Swedish term or phrase: spindeln i nätet
Those who translate this as "the spider in the web" invariably seem to come from Sweden or the Netherlands.
It means, of course, at the centre of things.
Can anyone suggest a suitable metaphor in English?

pulling the strings

Explanation:
This might do - as in a puppet-theatre.

It's slightly more colourful than 'in the director's / pilot's seat' or hte driving seat.

My first thought was 'centre stage', but there is more control in pulling the strings!

For me, "all the world's a stage" today :-)

neutral  Mårten Sandberg: "spindeln i nätet" does not really imply low visibility like in "grå eminens"
