การเดินเป็นกระบวนการที่อาศัยความสัมพันธ์อันสลับซับซ้อนของข้อสะโพก, ข้อเข่า, <br />ข้อเท้าและเท้า ทำให้มีการเคลื่อนที่ของร่างกายไปทางด้านหน้า โดยขาข้างหนึ่งจะทำหน้าที่เป็นตัวรับน้ำหนัก ส่วนขาอีกข้างหนึ่งจะทำหน้าที่เป็นตัวก้าวไปข้างหน้า หลังจากนั้นจะมีการสลับหน้าที่กันของขาทั้ง 2 ข้าง เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นจนครบวงจรของขาข้างใดข้างหนึ่งจะเรียกว่า วงจรการเดิน (gait cycle)
