German term

Seitenabschnitte

German to English Tech/Engineering Forestry / Wood / Timber
I am translating this text on paper mill production, and it refers to "Seitenabschnitt" when talking about timber or by-products thereof from sawmills (see below).

I am wondering if there is a better option to use than "side sections" (which comes across as too generic).

Thank you in advance for your answers.

"So fallen etwa in den Sägewerken, die an die Zellstoffwerke angekoppelt sind, ***Seitenabschnitte*** an, die direkt weiter in die Zellstoffproduktion transportiert werden."

Discussion

Didn't even notice... ...this sentence from the link posted below:
"Utilization of Slabwood and Other Sawmill Wastes"
https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED137056.pdf

Same paragraph. Of course, it wasn't quoted; it would have entirely undermined the argument being made.

That's no longer some innocent mischief. Other references I haven't posted yet:
"There has been a marked improvement in the utilization of mill-waste by sawmills in the Southern Coast region of British Colulnbia. This waste material, which results from the conversion of the sawlog into lumber, comprises slabwood, trimmings and sawdust."
https://pubs.cif-ifc.org/doi/pdf/10.5558/tfc12072-1

We can argue about trimmings; but sawdust is not it. Cf.:
"Slabwood bundles consist of the sides of timber that we cut off when it is first put through the Sawmill, but also contain rejected and broken planks that have been processed..."
https://www.gov.im/categories/business-and-industries/isle-o...

Obviously, neither ENS source can hold a candle to a link as illustrious as that Reverso one, which revolves around...pretzels.

Why is it so hard to stick to the topic? Just once, pls?

What does slab wood mean?
The Ultimate Guide to Wood Slabs - Part I
Wood Slab (n.) A flat piece of wood that is unique and displays organic character. Often used as table or benchtops, wood slabs automatically elevate the space they are sited on.

Robert Dunn (asker) Feb 1:
The text just discusses sawmills (Sägewerke) in the general sense. The text actually focuses on TCF vs. ECF mills and just mentions sawmills a few times without going into greater detail.

After consulting the sources, I am becoming more convinced with "side cuts" or "side sections", but I will still add a note for the client during delivery.
Arne Krueger Feb 1:
Yes, I do understand the difference between slab wood and wood slabs. ^^ But we still have the same issue. We do not know what type of saw mill it is... Robert can choose any of these entries, I'm afraid. He got the text before him and can make sense of the proposals.
Bourth Feb 1:
@ Arne It's not 'wood slabs', it's 'slabwood' (or 'slab wood'), a totally different nanimal.
Arne Krueger Feb 1:
Hi Bourth,
Thanks for highlighting this. As mentioned in my previous entry, you may be right, but the text does not say anything about wood slabs specifically. Or at least we don't know what kind of "Seitenabschnitte" it refers to. Can be anything of the words proposed here... In the end, and this was my thinking, it is about a by-product that is sent for ultimate processing. So, it does not matter how you describe the word. For me, it is just waste... ^^ Sorry!
Kim Metzger Feb 1:
side cuts Seitenware is definiert als Nebenprodukt (Bretter) welches bei der Produktion eines Hauptproduktes ... "an der Seite anfaellt."
https://msholz.de/schnittholz/bauschnittholz-konstruktionsho...
https://msholz.de/en/sawn-timber/construction-timber/boards-...

I would tip "side sections" or "side cuts" = sections or cuts on the sides of wood or timber pieces.
Arne Krueger Feb 1:
My understanding of it is that it is essentially just "waste", or "Verschnitt" as we call it in Germany...

This just sounds better to me than anything with the word 'side'. 'Slabs' should be clear enough and shortest in this case.

slabwood

I get the impression this is the wood cut from a log (to give at least one flat surface for putting the log through the saw - funny way of putting it, isn't it, since it is the saw (blade) that goes through the log), then that cut from the sides of each flat 'slab' to make planks.

" ‘Cheeks’ and offcuts from our sawmill come as slabwood bundles"

Note too that 'slab' has a specific meaning in the timber industry. In German it is:

Schwarte Der beim Aufschneiden eines Stammes sich ergebende äussere Teil, der auf einer Seite die Schnittfläche und auf der anderen Seite die Stammoberfläche zeigt".

"slab Exterior portion of a log, removed in the process of sawing, that has one sawn surface, the other being the outside of the log"
[Dreisprächiges Rund- und Schnittholz-Wörterbuch, ed. Centre Technique du Bois et de l'Ameublement, Oct. 1995, ISBN 2-85684-035-3]

I have not more than a couple of sites with 'Seitenabschnitte' relating to timber* found, which to me suggests that it a non-standard term is. I suppose the options are to use what one believes to be the standard term, or to 'just the words translate'.

*"Hierdurch können selbst noch Seitenabschnitte zu sauber besäumten Bretter weiterverarbeitet werden."

In the timber indistry, 'slab' is indeed a difficult word to get your head around.
It can be a flat 'slab of wood' with two or more sawn faces, as produced by a sort of mobile sawmill consisting of a large chainsaw on a rig that carries it horizontally along a log to cut such slabs. This type of equipment is called a slabber or a slabbing mill. It produces slabs.
It can also be the piece or rounded wood sawn from a log, as stated previously.
This video shows a Schumacher 'double edger'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITsa48zFwLw Others call it a 'double edge slabber' - https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=551719788722376 - or 'double slabber' ("a Stenner re-saw, a multi-rip saw, a Schumacher double slabber and will shortly have our Stenner board mill up and running")
Just to complicate things further, what might have been such a physical rounded 'slab' were it sawn from the log, can also be removed by a chipping mill or 'slabber head' and still be known as slab. No physical 'slab' is actually produced, just the chips made from the corresponding part of a log. This is obviously ideal for pulp.

"During the primary transformation in wood industry, logs are faced with conical rough milling cutters commonly named slabber or canter heads. Chips produced consist of raw materials for pulp paper and particleboard industries."
https://sam.ensam.eu/bitstream/handle/10985/8497/LABOMAP_CFM...

"The production of dissolving pulp from poplar wood residual slabs was investigated. The residual slab chips were initially prehydrolyzed and subsequently pulped by the kraft process; the resulting brownstock was bleached using a totally chlorine-free (TCF) sequence to full brightness"

Seeing "edge" used in relation to the machine shown above, I looked for some examples with the word.

"The logs are being flitch sawn and processed in the bole. Theedge cuts and slabs that would, in a conventional lumber operation, end up in the waste pile are being repurposed into furniture components."
https://tomsvecfurniture.org/section/488007-Lumber.html
Here, I *imagine* 'slab' refers to the Schwarte and 'edge cut' to what is trimmed from the edges of the flitches ('planks') cut from the log.

"Flitch: A large piece of sawn log intended for further cutting. A flitch may have two or more sawn edges but is not sawn to final dimension"

"I set the next log to be cut on the mill and the edge cuts came off nicely"
https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=111872.0

"The 2012 addition of the manual edger line brought versatility to the operation, allowing it to process 6m long material from its carriage. The pre-positioning infeed allows the operator to visually determine the optimum edge cuts for the flitch. "

agree Gordon Matthews : Given the context - "Seitenabschnitte" are processed to produce cellulose for use in paper production - "slabwood" seems to be the technical term used in the (English-speaking) timber industry.

agree Björn Vrooman : Cf. https://sheboygan.craigslist.org/for/d/kiel-slabwood-bundles... In particular: https://treeterms.co.uk/files/definitions/slabwood/ - offcuts seems to be the overarching term and that too may work here, as the German is ambiguous.

As shown in figures 1, 1, and K, the center part 29 of the log is taken with parallel sawings 27 and 28 for producing spars, planks and boards, while side sections 30 and 31 are separated and processed in accordance with figures J and K in a similar fashion as described in connection with figures G and H so that an oblique-sided 33, 34 timber piece 33 , 34 will be obtained.

Large flat slabs can be dissected from these larger logs and easily turned cylindrical on the bandsaw, as described above. Platters and natural edge bowls can be created from the outer portions of the log. Smaller bowls can be made from inner side sections.

The 26” diameter was cut into 3 sections with the middle section being 10” thick. I opted to work on one of the side sections of about 8” thick for my first test piece. This would make a more shallow bowl, but was a good piece to practice on.

Side cut products
Side cut products are square-edged, and are available as double-sticked, or un-sticked packs upon request. We also propose a large stock of kiln dried planks for the packaging and trading market.

Now back to left side. First left side cut was 5" leaving about 1" of wood to hold the board up off the blade. I then wedged the board to hold it up off the blade and cut the last inch.
