2.2.2. Module design. On all the cameras, the blocks are grouped into containers called ‘modules’ (Advance), ‘buckets’ (951) or ‘cartridges’ (962). On the Advance, modules contain 2x3 blocks, with the longer side aligned with the scanner axis. The detector ring comprises 56 modules. On the 962, cartridges contain 1x 4 blocks, again with the longer side aligned with the scanner axis. There are 72 cartridges around the detector ring. On the 951, buckets contain 4x1 blocks, and are positioned with the short side aligned with the scanner axis. The detector ring comprises 16 buckets. On the 962, cartridges are further grouped (in sets of three) into what are also known as ‘buckets’, but these are essentially electronic rather than physical devices. For clarity, we will henceforth refer to physical block containers on all three scanners as modules. The module structure can cause variations in detection efficiency in a range of ways. For example, the modules can be misaligned within the gantry, or there may be variations in geometrical or intrinsic efficiency effects that repeat with the same periodicity as the module structure.
