The theme of dualism also pervades the work of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900). He introduced his own version of Zarathustra in the form of a Rhadamanthine figure who confronts his listeners about their failure to examine their moral codes or faiths. In this celebration of individuality, of joyful self-sufficiency, Zarathustra, after ten years living alone on a mountain, descends to proclaim that God is dead and that man needs to overcome, to become an Übermensche.
