Thanks for info David, I will let my wife decide if it can be the back door itself. Besides being American and English/French graduate, she is the car enthusiast in the family, and she just traded her New Beetle in for another New Beetle, which I believe qualifies as a hatchback.

My wife says (so you better believe it):
open the hatchback is the same as open the trunk (Amer. for boot)

Tailgate
The "volet arrière" is usually the tailgate on a saloon car. This appears to fit with the context.

Flemming's right, of course, in that I should have said "hatchback" and not "saloon"... The "volet arrière" is the same as "hayon arrière" = the "fifth door" or tailgate on a five-door car.

It is the tailgate of an estate car too.

: I think the text refers to a "5-door" car. Is hatchback American only ?

No it's not American only. IMHo, it refers to a type of car, not the "fifth door".

: Not sure qhere you're going with this, but I went to your source, found Pickup, so I entered Taiboard. It redirected me to Tailgate. Your point was?

I'd call that a tailboard, but never mind. Plenty of Google hits for tailgate with various makes/models of passenger car.//Really? See http://www.thefreedictionary.com/pickup
