I am pretty sure given the context that we are talking about the farming meaning of batteuse, so threshing machine tradition would be the literal translation. It seems unlikely that it is a tradition around a whisk or hand held beater, although perhaps somebody has evidence to the contrary? I thought that knowing what this tradition involved might help me translate it. I think the best term in English might be 'threshing day' as it appears that some small towns in English celebrate something similar to what Rousselures describes and use the term threshing day for it. It is also used, as Suezen shows, in America. Thanks for all your answers. I will of course let you know what I decide to use in the end
