French term

mal-rond

French to English Tech/Engineering Medical: Instruments instrument for dental or surgical use
The term is in a patent for a hand-held instrument for dental or surgical use. The full sentence is:

La queue de l'outil, dont le diamètre n'set généralement que de 2,35 mm, étant d'une rigidité limitée et pouvant présenter un "mal-rond", la pince qui assure son serage risque donc de la forcer quelque peu, ce qui provoque son arquage et l'oscillation de l'extrémité active de l'outil.

The full patent is available at: http://www.epo.org/patents/patent-information/european-paten...

The term appears in the 4th paragraph.

Out of round:
Something that is not completely circular. For instance a wire wheel may be true in that it does not wobble from side to side, but it may have a flat spot. A condition where engine cylinder bore has greater wear at one diameter than another
The condition of brake drum when it has become distorted and is no longer perfectly round. In many cases an out of round brake drum can be salvaged by resurfacing on a brake lathe

The appropriate phrasing would be (here):
"...and it might present/have an out-of-roundness."

google examples:

"The analytical solution in Eq. (18) is valid for a perfectly round workpiece; however, a workpiece always has considerable out-of-roundness before grinding"

"One or both of those circumferential areas has an out-of-roundness, such that there occurs a press-fit along two or more preselected regions"

"The best sphere the ACPO team has made had a total out-of-roundness of 35 nanometres."
It has a maximum out-of-roundness of ± 0.03 mm.

neutral CMJ_Trans (X) : the expression I have heard is "out of round" but not in the same context

You are right, they are synonyms. Thank you CMJ!

Thanks, Jan!
disagree liz askew : hmmm Your first site is to do with welding. I would be careful, as you are not citing medical refs. And I am not saying I have found the "right" answer either ;)

Your answer is an alternative, Liz (not completeley rounded); However the technical, engineering term seems to be "out-of'round", out-of-circular"

off-centered shape

the instrument which refers to the text, is a high-speed rotating
drill, it works with the apparatus (your link), as they are very fine- shaped, sometimes it appears they are off-centered, that produces difficulty to be introduced in the dental turbine, and also
an imlproper rotation of the drill

I'm no expert on medical instruments, but I thought I'd send these refs in too:

"runout" - is this a possibility?

Hi

Your sentence, I see, gives a clue as to what "mal-rond" means as it is equated with "flottement"....i.e.floating/wavering/wandering/hovering"..

fraise.

So I do think the word you are looking for "runout OR wobble"...
