agree Hattie Hill : You call also say "graduate assistant" at some universities in the States. It really depends. Some schools call them "TAs" and others "GAs"

neutral Marian Greenfield : this is a commonly used term, but it does not mean an assitant... it's one of the levels before reaching full professor, above associate professor... for ex., I'm an Adjunct Assistant Professor at NYU...
