I am translating some of my own lit. crit work from Spanish into English, and this phrase is part of my last sentence, which is a metaphor! Quite crucial. ... es como un barco a la deriva a punto de descubrir un continente.

I like your phrase the most, but to be fair the previous translator got the term 'adrift' on its own before... |
