Is there a standard international term for these drugs? Would the name be special recognised outside the UK?

Not sure about Proz etiquette in these situations but none of these answers really answered my question. Thanks for your suggestions, but they're not licensed pharmaceuticals, they're not licensed medicinal products, they're not controlled drugs, they're not specials (which is what my mistyped question was getting at, sorry!!), and I have an aversion to footnotes. Whatever the Inuit call it, in the rest of the world it's called snow, so I think "unlicensed pharmaceuticals/medicines/drugs" covers it best :-)

disagree egj_translation : although this term exists and can easily be mistaken for 'licensläkemedel', the Swedish term actually describes a pharmaceutical that can only be prescribed by medical personnel licensed to do so.

controlled drugs

From Wikipedia (cf Swedish def of term):

The United Kingdom Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 aimed to control the possession and supply of numerous listed drugs and drug-like substances as a controlled substance. The act allowed and regulated the use of some Controlled Drugs (designated CD) by various classes of persons (e.g. doctors) acting in their professional capacity.

In clinical practice, this mostly applies to the use of strong opiates for pain management and some amphetamine-like stimulants used for Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder; both of which are regulated under Schedule 2.

disagree Tania McConaghy : controlled drugs refers to drugs that are potentially abused (eg opiates etc), licensläkemedel has nothing to do with this but refers to drugs which are not registered in Sweden- the prescriber must apply to LMV for permission to prescribe that drug

True, however, Metamina, Ritalin etc that are "licensläkemedel" in Sweden, are "controlled drugs" in the UK, so the terms basically cover the same substances (although an addendum to the translation would be required to avoid confusion).

It was not exactly a guess, as I had discussed it with a licensed professional before posting, but I agree with you, Sven: that was what I meant by an addendum (i.e. controlled drugs licensed by LMV).

I don't know why le link does not work. The text on the page is:

"Mer krångel väntar patienter som har licensläkemedel

2009-03-03Licensläkemedel kommer inte att kunna hämtas ut på vilket apotek som helst efter omregleringen av apoteksmarknaden.

Licensläkemedel är preparat som inte är godkända i Sverige utan kräver ett särskilt tillstånd från Läkemedelsverket. Tidigare har berörda patienter kunnat hämta ut dem på vilket apotek som helst.

När nya aktörer träder in på marknaden den 1 juli i år kommer reglerna att ändras.

Läkemedelsverket har tagit fram ett förslag till nya licensföreskrifter som är ute på remiss just nu. Den stora förändringen jämfört med tidigare blir att patienter med licensläkemedel förväntas bestämma sig för ett apotek i samband med förskrivningen.

Sedan blir det bara på det apoteket som läkemedlet kan hämtas.

There is no non-Swedish standard term; the term "licensläkemedel" does thus have to be explained. The Inuit have a single word for "snow that fell last year, melted on the surface and refroze with a hard surface"; why don't the Saudi have that too?

agree Charlesp : however I don't know that I would refer to it as "non-approved pharm..." : "licensed but not approved pharmaceuticals..." is what you are saying, and a native English speaker might wonder if there was a typo here.
