Different dictionaries translate as midshipman, ensign, or warrant officer.
As a rank below lieutenant, it would be a midshipman in British Navy, ensign in US Navy. I lean towards midshipman based on the word origination. Thoughts?

I'm speaking about the US NAVY.
A midshipmen is an officer that hasn't graduated the academy yet. He graduates and he's an ensign - the lowest officer rank.
A warrant officer is a prior enlisted guy (not officer) who is given a commission as an officer but is limited in what he can do.

For what it's worth, Semyon Lungin's film (1960), Мичман Панин, is translated in at least the source below as "warrant officer." (Oddly enough, on most of the sites I saw it is written as Michman Panin in English.)

higher than warrant officer and lower than ensign. Being a bit older, historically, satisfies both the American and British usages. Methinks, that is.

Oh well then, I stand corrected. It seem Russians translate Ensign Hornblower as мичман Хорнблауер. A good point for ensign. But the Italians translate it as "guardia marina" or "sottotenente della marina"... but Russians, again!, translate "guardia marina" as "гардемарин" and not as мичман. So, in my naivetè I thought that petty officer will do but, am actually wrong because it's an enlisted rank.

В принципе, в зависимости от региональных особенностей, в равной степени востребованы все три приведнных варианта. хотя petty officer и warrant officer отличаются друг от друга с точки зрения процедуры присвоения данных званий..и все же, на мой взгляд, русскоязычному понятию "мичман" наиболее точно соответствует термин senior sailor - и в том, и в другом случае лишь одна стуренька отделяет от офицерского звания.

Agree upon midshipman in US Navy being equal to guardemarin in Russia, and in the Royal Navy to michman. Petty officer will not work at all, it is not an officer's rank.
