I'd like to draw attention to Tony's suggested modification (below) which I think is a definite improvement:
*I *confined* myself to replying to those who had approached me directly*
Thanks Tony!

Tony M
: I like the overall idea, but would prefer 'confined' rather than 'limited' here. / I think it would be a good idea, to give Asker that extra option :-)

Yes, I prefer confined too, now you mention it! Should I suggest it as a note?

: "approached" deals with the unknown method of contact very neatly. Also like "confined"

I only responded to those who spoke to me directly
Quite simply?

: Probably, yes; but it rather depends on the context, i.e. does the 'adressé' actually mean 'speak to'?

to those who contacted me directly
or "to the people who..."
As Tony rightfully (as usual!) said, the final translation really depends on context. You could end up with "I only replied to those who contacted me directly" but the notion of "contact" suggests that the people are not in the same place at the time.

: But to me the notion of 'contact' includes face-to-face in-person contact as well.:-)
