Discussion

AllegroTrans Sep 18, 2013:
Agree with TM I think we need the overall context to assess what the "interest in me" actually is - there are too many alternatives otherwise
Tony M Sep 18, 2013:
Context I think the most idiomatic solution here is going to depend on the context (and register) of the document, which it would be helpful if you could share with us, please?

I limited myself to replying to those who had approached me directly

Another option.

I'd like to draw attention to Tony's suggested modification (below) which I think is a definite improvement:

*I *confined* myself to replying to those who had approached me directly*
Thanks Tony!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I like the overall idea, but would prefer 'confined' rather than 'limited' here. / I think it would be a good idea, to give Asker that extra option :-)

Yes, I prefer confined too, now you mention it! Should I suggest it as a note?
agree Colin Morley (X) : "approached" deals with the unknown method of contact very neatly. Also like "confined"

Thanks Colin.
agree writeaway : or get away from the flowery French and use I only replied to

Ha ha! See what you mean. Thanks writeaway.

French term (edited): aux personnes qui se sont adressées directement a moi

I only responded to those who spoke to me directly

Quite simply?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Probably, yes; but it rather depends on the context, i.e. does the 'adressé' actually mean 'speak to'?

to those who contacted me directly

or "to the people who..."
As Tony rightfully (as usual!) said, the final translation really depends on context. You could end up with "I only replied to those who contacted me directly" but the notion of "contact" suggests that the people are not in the same place at the time.
Peer comment(s):

agree rkillings : But to me the notion of 'contact' includes face-to-face in-person contact as well.:-)
