The extraordinary irony is that the theory that is criticized for its presumed excessive intrapsychic emphasis *provides much latitude* for a critical distinction between a fantasized construction of the other and an experience of the other in terms of who the other actually is, whereas the quasi-philosophical perspective of a so-called relational or intersubjective theory seems to preclude the possibility of knowing and loving another as he or she actually is.
