"Root Valve" is a common term used in an oil refinery or other type of process plant as a generalization for a valve that, by its placement is the primary shut-off valve for a sub-header leaving a main header.
The "Root" has more to do with the placement or location rather than the type of valve.
In instrumentation ,the term root valve is used to designate the valve which isolates the instrument from the process and is close to the process line.
For example in a flow transmitter mounted at around four ft or so from ground ,the valves connected to the orifice flange taps at a higher elevation is called the root valve.
