Black liquor is a byproduct of the kraft process, (also known as kraft pulping or sulfate process) during the production of paper pulp. Wood is decomposed into cellulose fibers (from which paper is made), hemicellulose and lignin fragments. Black liquor is an aqueous solution of lignin residues, hemicellulose, and the inorganic chemicals used in the process.

Сульфатный черный щелок, являющийся побочным продуктом про-изводства целлюлозы, представляет собой сложную смесь органических и неорганических веществ [1]. Его сухое вещество состоит на 1/3 из не-органических и на 2/3 из органических веществ. Из неорганических ве-ществ в щелоке после варки присутствуют большие количества неизрас-ходованного сульфида натрия, едкий натр и соли натрия (карбонат, сульфат, тиосульфат и др.). Органические вещества черного щелока представляют собой продукты разрушения древесины. При этом в рас-твор варочного щелока переходит основная масса лигнина, гемицеллю-лоз, экстрактивных веществ, частично растворяется также и целлюлоза.
