English Marketing Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
"Gillettes provide urban chic appeal, night or day."

Kan anyone explain what kind of garment this is?

Discussion

William [Bill] Gray Oct 6, 2006:
Here are a couple of references to the askers spellling:¨
http://stores.ebay.ie/BRANDED-FASHION
http://petite-fort.tripod.com/Dress.htm
Sometimes it is spelled (wrongly?) this way, it seems.
Jonathan MacKerron Oct 6, 2006:
unless they are indeed talking about some product of the Gillette Razor Company??
CMJ_Trans (X) Oct 6, 2006:
well the only spelling I know for this is indeed GILET - Gillette is a brand name for something quite different - I think it's a typo
Bjørnar Magnussen (asker) Oct 6, 2006:
I just got a note back from the client: It's a sort of waistcoat, sleeveless, well-fitting and with buttons on the front side. Men wear it under a suit jacket.
CMJ_Trans (X) Oct 6, 2006:
is this not GILET, French word meaning a (usually) sleeveless jacket?

My partner's very fond of them!

agree Rachel Fell : but is it really spelt like that, sometimes, rather than"gilet"?\\Good, just checking in case! ;-)

not as far as I know! I've only ever seen or heard it as "gilet".
agree Jonathan MacKerron : neither OED nor Websters III reconizes "gillette"??; although this may indeed be a new word created by fashion designers??

yes, as I've already said in my response to Rachel - I was responding after the exchange between CMJ and the asker.//thanks for changing your comment - I think it's just a typo though!
agree William [Bill] Gray : See my note to asker, with a couple of links to the other spelling.
