French term

l’Opening

French to English Marketing Advertising / Public Relations Parisian high society? Living it up in Paris?
L’esprit Cocktail ou l’Opening
_________________
The article is supposedly about a fashion house, but most of it deals with the hedonism/ jetsetting/ bohemian lifestyle of Paris in a bygone era
Unfortunately, it consists mainly of a series of headings/captions such as this, with very little actual context. Images are of various jetsetteurs mingling and enjoying themselves (Princess Margaret, Jackie Kennedy...) or at least looking as though they are - with the odd fashion shot thrown in. The next set of images is about parties, beautiful people, glamour (don't know if that helps)...

I'm afraid I have no idea what l'Opening can mean, although doubtless it's a well-known phrase (for some)! I'd be very grateful for suggestions - many thanks!

Change log

Feb 19, 2010 07:04: Stéphanie Soudais changed "Field" from "Other" to "Marketing" , "Field (specific)" from "Other" to "Advertising / Public Relations"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): philgoddard, L.J.Wessel van Leeuwen

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Stephanie Ezrol Feb 18, 2010:
Carol, I think that you author is drawing up an image of the glitterati who show up at the opening of anything and everything. And ofcourse with the opening there are always cocktails. For a fashion house that's your clientele, if you are talking about designer clothing, not off the rack clothing. That is if your fashion house is selling designer clothing not off the rack clothing.

And there is an Opening -- a fashiow show - for the a designer's new line.
Carol Gullidge (asker) Feb 18, 2010:
@ Stéphanie I thought I already replied to you, but it's disappeared!
Beginning of the evening or launch of the season... I wonder - they all sound feasible
Carol Gullidge (asker) Feb 18, 2010:
a few more lines, for what it's worth I don't think they give much away, especially as bits are missing:

Accélération et déplacement de la mondanité vers l’art, la mode, le
spectacle
Art et mécène
Puissant protecteur des arts
Mondanités d’après-midi
Carol Gullidge (asker) Feb 18, 2010:
Opening of a show I hadn't thought of that. It was talking about shows a little earlier in the text, but I thought they had moved on. I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with art galleries
Stéphanie Soudais Feb 18, 2010:
Référence au début de soirée peut-être ? Ou au lancement de la saison ?
jmleger Feb 18, 2010:
Opening of a show vernissage if it's in an art gallery

Sylvia Park Celebrates FASHION OPENING
On Monday morning I faced a dilemma; I had nothing to wear. Well, I had lots of bland, uninteresting outfits, but what could I possibly wear to a FASHION SHOW? I decided to wear stylish jeans, and a nice pink top.

After all, the SHOW celebrating the opening of phase two of Sylvia Park’s fashion stores on the 28th of August 2006, will just be a wee event in a shopping mall, right?

Note from asker:
many thanks Bourth! Perhaps I couldn't see the wood for the trees, and this really is it. I don't get the impression it's a fashion-show opening, but won't rule this out.

agree philgoddard : I don't think it's the translator's problem to work out what is being opened.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks Bourth, as well as Angie for the explanation! Why this was not called L'Ouverture, I don't know, but anyway this fits. And, no, Writeaway, this appeared in a French text, even if they have borrowed an English word. Sometimes these "borrowings" can be extremely faux amis, so you can never take them for granted ... "

Céremonie d'ouverture

Compte tenu du contexte mondain, en plus a trait au monde de la mode; le texte semble faire allusion à l'idée d'ambiance de fête où s'allie ''esprit Cocktail ou cérémonie d'ouverture''...
