retention dam

All the references I saw dealt with small dams for the purpose of flood control, stocking water for winter snow-making, or other small-scale purposes.
Example sentence:

Retention basin (retention dam) A flood control structure that holds back flood water for a short period to take the peak off a downstream flood. The dam on a retention basin is usually provided with an opening too small to allow the full flood flow to pa

disagree Francis Marche : "a catchment" is "un bassin"; "un barrage" is "a dam"

small dams/reservoirs

Though the term has a strictly more literal meaning, it has come to be used for small reservoirs/dams in general, often a farm dam/reservoir, not at all necessarily on a hill.

I think it has come up on ProZ before too.

See comments there (the following repeated from there, and from my notes).

Collinaire (lac) Impounding dam, impoundage, overnight or daily storage (Zimbabwe), snowmelt storage dam (Dragages TP), hilltop reservoir [ICOLD], small dams.

retenue collinaire

[Fig. 3 in this document gives pictures. A "retenue collinaire" looks like what I would call a "tarn" and is entirely natural I suppose, while a "barrage collinaire" is man-made]

Soil conservation strategy in the semi-arid areas of central Tunisia has focused on the construction of numerous HILL RESERVOIRS. However, limited rainfall combined with severe soil erosion is jeopardizing the usefulness of hill reservoirs such that there is an urgent need to undertake further studies into the location and efficiency of SMALL DAMS

"collinaire" because they hold back small quantities of water on small watercourses, unlike what we might call "valley dams" which create enormous reservoirs.
