l'invention propose

French to English Science Law: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright patents
I would like to know how to say this in "patent speak", if possible. I can't give any context here without violating confidentiality but here are some typical examples from other patents:

the invention provides

I agree with Jane's points, but not with her offer for an answer.

Feature just doesn't 'sit' with the rigid structure of patents.

I have edited Japenese, Russian and Hebrew Patents translated to English by scientists, and they have always used 'provide' in such structures. Have a look at practically any Patent at the USPTO

sorry, yeah....

eg the invention provides an underwater transmission network through fibre-optics...

etc etc

It sounds a little strange to the english ear, but it is the accepted way, I believe

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks a lot! I think provides is better because it could apply to features or processes whereas "features" is limited to physical features. At least I think it sounds bizarre to say "the invention features a method...""

I\'m sorry to be harsh but really, these examples are very poor English and I have to say that I can\'t believe they were given, quite frankly...

STYLE NOTE RE FRENCH:

In French, you have often to put in a verb like proposer b ecause the invention cannot do it directly in French structure...

In English, you can subsitute the name of the thing, and say way it does so you get either:

The device selects an opening and blah blah blah

OR

The invention FEATURES a device that selects and opening...

--------------------------------------------------

By the way, this is not patentese. this is typical French structure to say that.

A NOUN propose X.....It\'s very used, especially in written texts, journalistic, scientific et al...

FYI, French speakers:

PROPOSE in English is only for people....
things don\'t propose in English, only in French!!!

several options here:

with this contraption, you will be able
this contraption does this or that
proposer is basically a way to introduce the wonderful things the contraption can do for you. In English, I would go straitht to the point.
Viel Glück, mein Freund!
Peer comment(s):

agree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : yes I said that, did I not?
