I am not sure to understand your point. Technically, both are the difference between investment and equity. For goodwill, this equity includes additional entries. Last, in a consolidation system, the second does not exist. It is only a step in calc.

I suspect the writer has given a faulty description of what is going on, since goodwill is an aggregate residual. It would make more sense to me if it were about treatment of differences on first consolidation (écarts de première consolidation).
