Hi Dave! I appreciate "scourge" is possibly a little stronger than "whip" but the phrase seems good for the context

Dave, I acknowledge a native speaker's input, but all the other context still leads me to prefer the resonances and associations of "scourge" (which overlaps with chastise, in the sense of punish); and "scourge" also retains the literal component of meaning of the source term alongside the metaphorical use.

Je me rends compte qu'on ne dit pas ça habituellement, mais j'ai adapté l'expression 'to prick one's conscience'.

As well as energetically and repeatedly whipping, 'fouailler' also means to stir, to agitate... In this context, I think 'punish' is also an option.
