French term

faire péter les watts

French to English Other Slang video game dialog
Hi all,

This is from a video game dialog. From google, I know it's the name of a song, but I have no idea what it means. Some context is below, though it's only from character so it's very one-sided.

Bon, je vais plutôt aller boire une mousse.
Bon, ok, autant faire continuer le film, ou pas. Chais pas. Pfff.
Brrr, ça fout les chocottes…
Woah! Matez-moi ça, Mr Agressif,c’est qu'il me zigouillerait le doigt, héhé!
Hmm, d'ailleurs, si j'en crois la pub sur le site web, c'est pas que le doigt, en fait, ce petit mec est, genre, mortel, héhé.
M'en vais faire un peu péter les watts moi!
Ouaaais.. Ce truc, c'est du nec.. Necto… Niktu.. enfin, nectruc pour les oreilles quoi.
Attention: Mortel, à manier avec précaution…
Centru….roides….noxius…: Scorpion Mexicain.
Ok, je sais pas si j'ai bien fait d'acheter un scorpion sur le net…

Discussion

Nikki Scott-Despaigne Dec 7, 2011:
I think it would be good to get the idea of loudness into the verb, as the French does here.

If you consider the whole sentence, then something like :
"I'm off to do some sound blastin'"
"See ya. I'm gonna blast out some sound"

Not the best expression, but providing the answer for the term in the header and sticking it into the context of the sentence where it appears, there is a bit of a gap!

With Emiliano This is exactly the phrase I was about to suggest

pump up the volume

...is certainly what it means; however, I fear that this expression in EN may by now already be a bit passé?

I think the speaker probably means "I'm gonna play me some sounds REAL LOUD!" — I'm assuming it's referring to going off to listen to some 'music' rather than the video game itself?

'mettre les watts' means 'turn the sound up', and 'faire péter...' means 'play something REALLY loud!'

Sorry, I've only just spotted Emiliano's discussion post and addition to his answer...

In this particular context, I think it means "I'm going off to listen to some really loud music"

'mettre les watts' means 'turn the sound up', and 'faire péter...' means to play something REALLY LOUD!

agree Philippa Smith : I prefer "pump up the volume": it probably is a sound thing, 'cos of the reference to "oreilles"

agree Tony M : Something along the lines of 'pump up the volume'; 'at full blast' would be tricky to fit in with the syntax here...
