Selected
various areas with gravelly soils
I basically agree entirely with Jane's suggestion, but just wanted to add that, depending on context, the translation of 'différents' might possibly be better rendered as 'various' (and almost certainly NOT by 'several')

\'Gravelly\' sounds OK to me; after all, we have \'gravelly voice\' and \'sandy soil\'. don\'t we?
Not so sure about \'of\' though --- to start with it sounds too like the French use of \'de\' when meaning \'made of\', and often sitting uncomfortably in translation: \'a table of mahogany / a mahogany table\'. And in this particular instance, I think it adds confusion, since \'various areas of...\' might suggest a selection of small and large surface areas, whereas to my ears, \'various areas with...\' makes it clear enough that we are talking about \'area\' = \'locality\' and not \'surface area\'
Just my way of looking at it, I guess...
:-)

Also, as a little PS; we are not necessarily talking about \'various different sized pieces of some strecth of land with gravelly soil\', but I would guess (as is so common in discussions about wine and \'terroir\'), what may well be DIFFERENT gravelly soils --- whence the need for the plural, and thus my preference for \'with\'.
As always with wine, it\'s the aftertaste that counts.... Cheers !

Comment: "VERY difficult choice. Some very interesting comments eg. terroir! never easy that one! In the end I prefered 'various' to 'several'. I didn't think that gravelly soil sounded English either, that's why I asked ... when in doubt.
Thank you all so much for your help and happy new year to all!!"

sorry:

several areas of gravelly soil
terroir here may mean where there were already vines planted
in which case
several vine-planted areas of gravelly soil
OR
several areas of gravelly soil for planting vines
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 2004-01-02 18:06:35 (GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
The whole problem here is to know whether or not it is already planted or whether he was going to plant vines there...see what I mean?
That makes a difference for the whole phrase...there is no doubt that gravelly soils is correct though..

depends on your context
can be:
he selected/picked various tracts of land with a gravelly soil.
or he selected/picked different gravelly soils (belonging to) from various vineyard owners/winegrowers
Terroir is a word that is difficult to pronounce and perhaps more tricky to understand. Literally translated it means" soil" , but when you hear the people of Bordeaux and Perigord say the word you can tell that it means so much more.
For example, to a wine-maker, his terroir is a unique combination of soil chemistry , climate, sun and shade, altitude and slope, rainfall, drainage, proximity to the river, flora, fauna and divine providence that can create a wine with completely different character than that produced by his neighbour's terroir 100 yards away.
