Spanish term

a la de una/dos/tres

Spanish to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
"**Festival a la de una, de cine a la de dos, ¡europeo a la de tres!.** Después de un año de dilatada espera para los más cinéfagos, el festival de cine europeo de Sevilla sube el telón."

This is the first part of a short paragraph about a film festival. I'm not sure if the first sentence just means something like "one part festival, one part cinema, one part European" or something else.

Discussion

Jessie LN (asker) Nov 11, 2008:
Gracias Thank you so much. I had no idea that it related to "on the count of" or something like "ready, steady, go" like Blingo suggested.
Vistalba Nov 11, 2008:
hi Miralaluna It's a combination of 'European Film Festival' plus 'on the count of one, two, three!' ('Festival de Cine Europeo' + 'a la de una, a la de dos, a la de tres!', but all mixed together). I hope this has helped you and something similar can be done in English.

juego de palabras

la expresion intercala "festival de cine europeo" con el modo coloquial de iniciar una competicion o un juego, al la una, a las dos, a las tres..de dificil traduccion, podrias dejarlo como " European cinema festival, ready? Go!" a algo asi
Peer comment(s):

agree Alice Bootman : It is definitely a play on words. Your suggestion is good, and another one is "Ready, set, go! It's the European Film Festival!" This is, indeed, a difficult translation. Good luck!

ready, steady, go! / one, two, three! / going, going, gone!

Tres posibilidades que ofrece el Collins:

ready, steady, go! / one, two, three! / going, going, gone!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Alice Bootman : Right, but how does that fit the context of the question?

It's the one... European, two... Film, three... Festival!

It's a combination of "one, two, three!" and "European Film Festival"
Peer comment(s):

agree Alice Bootman : This is another good way of putting it.

Alice - could be: ON YOUR MARKS for the European, GET SET for Film, GO to the Festival! Don't love the first part, but someone craftier might tie it in better...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Alice Bootman : Ok, but how does that fit the context of miralaluna's question?

Alice, see above. Mostly, just putting another option out there for possible word play! Cheers, David
