I was just fiddling with Swordfish - which is Mac compatible - and it supports file formats such as TMX, XLIFF, etc.
Can anybody think of a reason why we can't anoint this as the new messiah, at least until a Mac-friendly Trados is programmed? | | |
thx for the tip.
I'll give it a check! | | | compatibility swordfish/other CAT tools | Jan 28, 2011 |
Hello all,
I am new to the use of CAT tools and as I work on a Mac platform it seems the best option is Swordfish. Can you confirm that?
Also - and please forgive if the question is dumb - is Swordfish compatible with, say, Trados? To explain better, if a client requires Trados, can I work on other platforms or not?
Thank you very much
Raffaella

Hi Rafaella,
Swordfish is compatible with Trados. You can use Swordfish to translate TTX files and unclean RTF files from Trados 2007 and also SDLXLIFF files from Trados Studio 2009.
You can also deliver TMX files that Trados imports without problems.
To explain better, if a client requires Trados, can I work on other platforms or not?
Tell your client that you don't have Trados but can deliver translated files in the format they need. Normally that's enough.
Regards,

Every attempt towards compatibility will fail as long as some agencies using Trados insist on being sent their sacrosanct (TTX and bilingual, anyone?) uncleaned files.
I for one have stopped working with some agencies for that reason. | | | Jenni Sheppard แคนาดา Local time: 05:07 ภาษาฝรั่งเศส เป็น ภาษาอังกฤษ + ... Has anyone tried Swordfish? | Sep 13, 2011 |
I've only just heard of Swordfish and would like to know if anyone has tried it? What about using Studio 2011 on a Mac?
Do you recommend installing a Virtual PC and work with Studio or I'd better use another CAT Tool?
Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,
Virtual solutions usually work fine with most applications, which means users are free to choose the CAT tool they want.
A good tool for doing this could be Oracle Virtual Box.
You can run it on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris:

Also, recent Mac computers offer an integrated virtualisation tool.

Windows applications have full access to multiple processors and multiple cores, accelerated 3D graphics, and high-speed ports and networking such as USB, FireWire, Wi-Fi, AirPort, and Gigabit Ethernet as well as drivers for audio and Bluetooth functionality. If you're using Mac OS X v10.5 or Mac OS X v10.6, the Boot Camp support software is on the Mac OS X installation DVD. After the installation of Windows is complete and you insert your installation flash drive or disc containing the Boot Camp support software (while booted in Windows), it is automatically installed on your Mac.
Depending on your computer’s hardware and OS X version, Boot Camp supports Microsoft Windows Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. For more details, see Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows. For information about using 64-bit editions of Windows Vista or Windows 7, see Boot Camp: Macs that work with 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7. Note: Windows 8 is not currently supported by Boot Camp.
Boot Camp Assistant creates a partition just for Windows without erasing your existing OS X volume.

Dear Jacques,
You are right. Bootcamp works fine but this is not a virtualisation solution.
I was thinking of Nova Parallels Desktop for Mac & VMware Fusion for Mac.
Thanks for your input everyone.
