Hi all,
surely every one during her/his career hade to face with a boring project (boring for a variety of reasons).
I'd like to know if you have some tips & tricks to fight boredom while working.
As for me, I generally listen to music, but sometimes this is not sufficient.

Hi Silvia,
How about taking a break every, say, hour and a half, or every chapter or so many pages? Go water the plants, nip out for some bread, check the mailbox...
If you have smaller texts to translate, perhaps you could slip one in every so often to break the monotony.

Having breaks in between and "rewarding" yourself is a way to keep yourself motivated. If you work on a large (boring) project, divide it into chunks. You could for instance tell yourself that you are allowed to have a cup of coffee, make a phone call to a friend, go for a walk, eat some chocolate, go on proz.com , etc. once you have translated a certain number of pages. wonderful, especially in blizzards - and really does make you get up and go out - even if you often don't feel like it at all (and helps against burglars, postmen bringing bills, neighbours borrowing sugar, carol singers - and is also, should you need it, great for flirting with opposite-sex owners of dogs.

I agree with Sabine. You need to break your day (and the document) up. By doing so you avoid getting bored and you'll be more focussed when you are actually doing the doc.

believe me, cats won't help. I have three of them and they spend their time sleeping on my desk next to my pc while I am working. Looking at them surely helps relax but they are no use when you need a good reason to go on working on a boring translation!!! You just ask yourself "why am I supposed to go on instead of phoning my client and tell him/her that I have had an unexpected problem and cannot do the job?

Oh and my 17 1/2 year old cat distracts me by looking like she's dying every so often.

I usually open up a good webcomic or funny Top 10 list and tell myself I can check the next one every 100-200 segments (SDLX) or every page. Keeps me very motivated.
Agree with the cat issue, having a cat sleep or your desk or lap is NOT motivating at all, I just want to bring him to the living room and have a nap too.

Work within sight of a window and put up a bird feeder or two. You never know, it might open up a new specialist area.
The arrival of birds is a constant delight both to me and my cat, who is NOT helpful while I'm working. This morning she walked across the keyboard, typed a load of rubbish, and deleted a string of HTML coding which was a pig to rewrite! I'm sure most cat owners have had this kind of "help". Still, it breaks the monotony.

I also appreciate the dog: we always start the day with a romp in the woods. I usually follow this with a little meditation and gregorian chant, which helps me start work energised, but relaxed and focussed. Later a nuzzle and a wagging tail will tell me when it's time to stop and go out for a walk.
I'm a great fan of the little rewards system, whatever the chore. We're still kids at heart. Just taking time out to prepare a simple nutritious meal rather than stuffing junk feeds body and soul to work better. Keeping the little chores of life going throughout the day, and making them as rich and varied as possible helps to keep "work" in perspective, and in its proper place. ▲ Collapse

I'm with Lany on this one. I read a lot of webcomics during the day—I find a dose of humor also helps when I'm racking my brain, trying to make sense of a jumbled sentence or difficult term. Something about it really helps clear the mind
