Hello everyone
I'm considering upgrading to a newer version of MS Office (perhaps 2010, perhaps 2013), and I need a spell-checker for my language. However, there is no spell-checker for my language that works with any version of MS Office above 2007. Do you know of a generic spell-checker for MS Office, or perhaps a grammar checking program or QA program that works with MS Word in which I can load a custom dictionary? I would prefer spell-checking while I type.
Thanks

Hi Samuel
I have Office 2010, I don't use Afrikaans and don't have it on my PC, but Office lists it as one of the languages I can download.

The dics of MS Word have the UTF-16 file format.
So, You could save your list of words in, for example, WordPad as UTF file. This saves it in UTF-16 file format.
Then add this file to the list additional dictionaries next to the Custom.dic. Don't forget give it dic extension.
No need change the Office. | | | Meta Arkadia Local time: 08:17 ภาษาอังกฤษ เป็น ภาษาอินโดนีเซีย + ...

One can download and install an Afrikaans user interface for MS Office, but it doesn't include an Afrikaans spell-checker.

MS Word only uses custom dictionaries if there is a spell-checker for that language installed. In other words, MS Word won't use an Afrikaans custom dictionary to spell-check an Afrikaans piece of text if there isn't also an Afrikaans spell-checker installed. One could add a custom dictionary to another language (e.g. English) and simply mark one's documents in that language, but then any word that is valid in either of those languages will be considered correctly spelled.
I suppose one could try that with e.g. a Russian spell-checker, to ensure that none of the words in the surrogate language also occur in the language of the custom dictionary. But I haven't been able to get a Russian spell-checker for MS Word... | | | Gabriele Demuth สหราชอาณาจักร Local time: 02:17 ภาษาอังกฤษ เป็น ภาษาเยอรมัน
I have recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and there seems to be a usable spell and grammar check for German, I just looked and Afrikaans is on the list of languages you can add as well.
Previously I have used a Duden spell check, that seems to have disappeared for some reason, but this integrated one seems ok so far. | | | Bernhard Sulzer สหรัฐอเมริกา Local time: 21:17 ภาษาอังกฤษ เป็น ภาษาเยอรมัน + ... Included for 2013? | Nov 13, 2014 |
I think I came across spell-checkers when I had to recently re-download my German spell-checker for my Office 2010 version and I believe they are all included/available for free now for Office 2013 - no matter where you buy the product.
I would contact Microsoft or look through their spell-checker information.

Yes, I found it... a free Afrikaans spell-checker for Word 2010. It's called the "language interface pack". An odd name, if you ask me, because I had always thought that the "interface pack" relates to the GUI language and not the proofing tools. But... there you go: the "interface pack" is actually proofing tools. | | | Alex Lago สเปน Local time: 03:17 ภาษาอังกฤษ เป็น ภาษาสเปน + ... No, I'm talking about language check | Nov 14, 2014 |

I went nowhere near the interface section, in word 2010 if you click on Language and the on Set Proofing Language you get a list of languages, this list includes Afrikaans so it has nothing to do with the user interface and only affects the language of the document in question. | | | Samuel Murray เนเธอร์แลนด์ Local time: 03:17 สมาชิก (2006) ภาษาอังกฤษ เป็น ภาษาอาฟริกา + ... I see. Yes, I know that one can set a document's language (or a paragraph's language) to anything, e.g. to Afrikaans, but one can then spell-check in that language only if that language's spell-checker is installed. Perhaps you know this, but you can set a piece of text as any language in the list (e.g. I often mark text as "Zulu" if I don't want it to be spell-checked, because it's more reliable to do that than to mark the text as its actual language, with "do not spell-check" enabled).
But... are you saying that there is an option in that dialog to *download* the Afrikaans spell-checker? | | | Alex Lago สเปน Local time: 03:17 ภาษาอังกฤษ เป็น ภาษาสเปน + ... | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Generic spell-checker for MS Word TM-Town | Manage your TMs and Terms ... and boost your translation business
