Yes, I quickly discovered this snag with my Toshiba laptop, and the only solution I found was to buy en external keyboard — or you can just by an external numeric pad.

Alternatively (but I could never manage it), get used to using 'character map'.

I used to have a little utility for typing accented characters, but I only used it under W98, so I don't know if it would work under XP / Vista etc. It was a bit basic, but did at least give realtively simple access to the ... See more

I found it on download somewhere, can't now remember where, but I'm pretty sure it was shareware. I think it could be a good solution for laptops.

I think xara Studio (not freeware!) may have been one of the ones I looked at.

where they list some of the commonest accented charctaers for which keyboard shortcuts already exist in MS Word (you can check what they are by using insert > special characters and looking to see what if any k/b s/cut is available as you seelct each letter.
