XP, but cursor vanishes in applications

I notice that many times during typing the cursor vanishes and what I type vanishes too. This happens when Thunderbird sucks mail from the server. When this happens, I have to click with the mouse in order to get the attention of the software back. This happens in Word and SDLX.
Is there a setting that has gone astray? I don't think this has happened earlier.
Nothing serious though, just wondering.

For example any details about computer like processor and how much RAM memory has your computer.
