Translation - English A change of mind
I was against the war and I did everything reluctantly but didn't take care to take other roads because it was too difficult. This time, the great offensive was approaching and I said to myself that if I could escape this one, I'll live to see the war end.
The sutler was near us, so I often went to drink with two comrades from Pizzone, Di Cristofero Nicola and Nicola something, I don't recall his surname. We were great friends and talked every evening of how to find a way to escape from the war. One night I got really drunk and threw up twice in the tent. Di Cristofero told me how I could end up in the hospital, but to be sure it would have ended badly, with a trial and a conviction. I told myself that if I stood in the trenches, surely it would have been worse than that, especially in these sad times. "Well ... I'll tell you (he said) but you must keep it a secret, otherwise it’s going to be worse for both of us" "You have nothing to worry", I said.
"If you want to inflate a leg you must do this: take a wire and pass it between your teeth, then you put in the needle and inside the leg for half a day. Then you pull it away and you will see that the leg will be swollen in two days.
You won't be able to walk, so they will send you to the hospital. You need to invent an excuse and say the same thing always, no matter how many times they’ll ask you."
For several days I thought about a good justification and the most appropriate time to do this.
Meanwhile, the departure approached judging from the nonstop bombing and the squadrons of planes that fluttered in the air, bombing the enemy lines. The enemy airplanes came also, but the machine guns shot down two of them.
I showed myself courageous with my comrades, even more than usual, while I secretly planned my escape.
The 18th, we were ordered to wash the laundry and I let everyone go before me. I went down a ravine of water and washed the dirty linen, ties and handkerchiefs. I prepared the needle, scissors and a wood stick, to push the needle with. I washed my feet, I looked around to be sure no one could see me. I thought this was a sin, that showed my lack of trust in God, that could have saved me from any danger, but then I thought, "God said that he saves us if we want to save ourselves", so I thread the leg with the needle, pushing it with the wood stick.
Then I thread the left foot also, to make them think that this wasn't something I did on purpose. Soon after this I began to feel pain. When I was alone, I regretted what I had done, worrying about the consequences.
In the evening I told the comrades, that I fell asleep by the water and woke up with this strange pain in my legs. They said that probably some poisonous insect bite me and I agreed with them. I got up during the night and pulled the thread out of my leg. I spent all night worrying .
Sunday 19th, we celebrated the mass with the chaplain and the whole brigade. After the mass, the general commanding the brigade, made a speech warning us that the departure was imminent and that we had to be brave and bring the victory home, so that we would soon be able to return to our loved ones.
