English to Russian: Egyptian sundial General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: History
Source text - English Egyptian sundial
The oldest known purpose-built sundial – loosely defined as any device that allows for the calculation of the hour via the angle of the sun from the shadow it casts – dates to around BCE 1500, though the Egyptians likely used their shadows cast by their obelisks going back even farther. Marks on the ground around obelisks and sundials allowed the Egyptians to calculate the time to a fairly sophisticated degree, leading them to eventually separate the day into 12 units of daylight.
This 12-hour day actually developed out of a 12-hour night – when the sun and the shadows it cast were nowhere to be found – devised by Egyptian priests based on the appearance of certain constellations in the night sky. There are 36 of these constellations, known as ‘decans’, different groups of which are visible in the sky at different points in the year.
As the Earth moved about its annual circumnavigation of the sun, the changing of the decans provided the Egyptians a means of tracking time. Every ten days, a new decan would appear in the eastern sky just before sunrise, leading ancient Egyptian priests to group each period of ten days together as a decan. The 36 decans allowed the Egyptians to create an administrative calendar of 360 days, with five days added to approximate the actual solar year of 365 days.
The rising of the star Sirius generally marked the beginning of the annual flooding of the Nile, an event of great significance for Egyptian life. At that time, 12 decans were visible across the heavens, and it’s these 12 visible decans, and the significance the Egyptians attached to them at this all-important time of year, that historians believe led them to divide the night into 12 equal parts. Daylight then received the same treatment – 12 units, from sunrise to sunset – creating the 24-hour day recognisable to modern humans.
Translation - Russian
