Portuguese to English: 100 Years with Saussure (Scientific Congress) General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Linguistics
Translation - English 2013 marks the death centennial of Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913). The Swiss thinker is considered the founder and pioneer of the science known as Modern Linguistics, and, in particular, of the structural trend which gained notoriety at the forefront of scientific studies in human sciences in the middle of the twentieth century. His book titled Course in General Linguistics, organized by the eminent linguists Charles Bally and Albert Sechehaye, with the collaboration of Albert Riedlinger, from the class notes taken by some of Saussure’s students over a period of three years in his course about linguistics between 1907 and 1910, remains as the standard reference in the field of general linguistics. The book was heralded by many as a revolution in the study of natural language, and by extension, of all human languages. Saussure’s intellectual legacy is vast. At the end of the twentieth century, with the discovery of previously unknown manuscripts, Saussure comes back with new elements which better translate the elegance of his thought and prompt a fresh examination of his work. His Writings in General Linguistics, published in 2002 by Simon Bouquet and Rudolph Engler – and the even newer edition by René Amacker (Geneva, Droz, 2011) – introduces new questions to the field of linguistics as well as to the general field of epistemology. Several researchers reassess saussurean thought today, confronting and contrasting the Course, the Writings, and other works (Germanic languages, anagrams, Indo-European languages…). In different parts of the world, scholars have expressed interest in a new take on Saussure’s theories, their underlying philosophy and patent epistemology. One hundred years after the Genevan´s death, the academic world of linguistics has an opportunity to be with Saussure in an International Congress organized by the Program of Semiotics and General Linguistics of the University of São Paulo, in partnership with other institutions, to honor the most essential of linguists. Linguists, historians, philosophers, semioticians, literature experts, and other human sciences researchers will be among those invited and expected at this gathering.
