Anyone else noticed this? When I type a word with a short dash such as "semi-pointue", it gets changed to "sem--pointue" (the letter before the short dash disappears and short dash is replaced by a long dash).
How do I turn this feature off? I'm still not totally familiar with Word 2007. | | | Word 2007 autocorrect options | Aug 3, 2008 |
It does not happen to me (Italian version), but maybe it's one of the French auto-correct options?
In Word, click on the Office button (top left corner), then on the Word options button at the bottom of the menu that opens up. Choose the third option from the top (Proofing?) and then click on Autocorrect options. In the default tab, check if there is anything in the list, e.g. i- that gets replaced automatically with something else, and if so, remove it (I remember using an English version... Then look at the Autoformat tab and check if there is anything there that needs to be unchecked, I see that -- gets replaced automatically with a long dash.
I hope this helps. ▲ Collapse | | | Jack Doughty สหราชอาณาจักร Local time: 19:00 ภาษารัสเซีย เป็น ภาษาอังกฤษ + ... เพื่อระลึกถึง From one novice to another | Aug 3, 2008 |
I only got it a few weeks ago, but I think I know the answer to this one.
Click "MS Office" button top left. Click "Word Options" at bottom.
Click "Proofing". Click "AutoCorrect Options". Click "Autoformat as you type" tab.
Under Replace as you type, the second check box down on the right is "Hyphens (long dash with dash)". Uncheck this.

I always use Alt+Ctrl+minus (on numeric pad) for "em-dash" ("long dash") and Ctrl+minus (numeric pad) for "en-dash" ("short dash" or "minus"). It is as easy as using Alt+(+) for "next segment" in Trados. And switch OFF the AutoReplace function in Word. Some CAT tools don't like it.

Ah ha, so that's where the autocorrect options were hiding
Found it and unchecked relevant settings, hopefully that will solve it (so far, seems to work the way I want it to). Actually I'm beginning to wonder if I wasn't accidentally hitting the hypen key twice?

I also tested the CTRL - (numeric) and ALT CTRL - (numeric) as Sergei suggested, and that works as well. The 'en-dash' using this method seemed a little longer than the regular hyphen on my keyboard (the one on the #6 key, French keyboard) so I started wondering about that and ended up reading the Wikipedia article on dashes/hyphens. I'm glad I did, as I learned all about the different dashes, I was not aware of the different usage for the different dashes.
