We have a very large file (100k words) that basically consists of 10% plain text and the major part is embedded xml showing tables and text that also has to be translated.
This embedded text is neither accessible with Workbench nor with TagEditor.
Also the find replace function does not work in Word.
Is there any clue to come to a smart solution?
The client stated, that he has no chance to get hold of the tables separately.

Have you tried with the template: TRADOS Bookmark Handler.dot?
It is in Folder TT in SDL.

In general, XML codes are hidden in Word but if you select options in Word, they will be displayed, changed etc. Nxt, use the Bookmark handler template suggested by Fernando above.

I had a go with the bookmark handler. Although it looked good in the beginning it turned to not running giving various error messages, like
end of paragraph not found, and/or
pkg.package
It would even consider to use another CAT-tool than Trados.
Also I will try to take only a small bit of this file (9 MB) and do the bookmark procedure again.
Many thanks in the meantime and I still hope there is somebody out there that has a clue.

From what I understand it is an embedded document and not just copeid & pasted text.
Are you able to access the text when double clicking in it?
If yes, then copy & paste it into a new document. Otherwise you will need this text made accessible by your customer.

That's what I made clear to the agency already.
Text is accessible and could be copied - translated - copied and pasted again.
But under these circumstances I would certainly have to reject this job.
However, many thanks for beeing so clear on that.

I did a Publisher document last month and the procedure was very similar, you have to select each text "block" translate it in Word and paste back into Publisher. It was a 87 pages PUB, but, once started it was not so hard or needed more time, in fact are just 4 clics more for each block.
Maybe you can translate the doc file and once finish, goes table after table. If the payment is good, I suppose CH level, then I would do it.

Using a CAT, of course!
I prefer Trados T-Window for Clipboard and similar CAT for such non-standard source file. I can translate segment by segment without seeking functions of Word. Most CATs have this interface.

Would you lose anything if you go the plain text route (formattting, embedded objects/tables etc.)? If not, then you might extract the text from within the tags with regular expressions...
