Hi,
I would not use any online solution without asking my customers for permission to keep their files online on a server.
You never know who has access to those files, for how long they are kept as backups on the server if you delete them and who is going to obtain access to your files in the future (for instance, if another company buys Dropbox).

I would stick to physical devices I can carry (external drives, usb sticks, etc.) and would keep all of them encrypted.
If you still go for an online solution, you should at least encrypt the files you keep online.

Those are the type of concerns I had but I have been comforted that others feel that keeping data online isn't necessarily unsafe. On the other hand a pickpocket, handbag thief, burglar could steal my USB key or laptop in an instant. I wonder sometimes if some of my fear comes from my lack of understanding rather than from any real security risk. Still, security is something we have to take seriously and I would certainly encrypt files held online.
I would stick to physical devices I can carry (external drives, usb sticks, etc.) and would keep all of them encrypted.
The real problem I see with that is version control. Certainly I am happy to use these devices for backup and occasional transfer but having my main files on USB has so far led me to grow grey hairs. Did I copy that file to my USB key when I updated it or is the most up-to-date version on my home computer? Where have those changes gone that I made yesterday? Have I overwritten yesterday's version with last week's?
I'm beginning to feel that the only part of the job I can really do well is the translation. Unfortunately, although that's the essence of the job, you've got to get the translation intact to your client and then produce the paperwork. It isn't just the translation text files, it's the invoices, quotes, emails, logs, glossaries, TMs, book-keeping, ...

Please do not suggest other software but if you use Dropbox, I'd really appreciate your input.
Okay, so I won't suggest a free Hamachi VPN (virtual private network), which is what I use in your scenario, which is direct computer-to-computer, no third parties involved. I have 3 computers in different places, and a VPN does the job perfectly.
I also use Dropbox, but only for sending large files to others. | | | จำนวนหน้าตามหัวข้อ: < [1 2] | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Would you recommend using Dropbox (free version)?
