Hi all,

Most translation companies require project managers, and many freelance members of ProZ.com advertise their ability to act as project managers. We would like to offer easier ways for the two groups to connect, by improving the directory, profiles and job posting system.

What parameters are important when you market yourself as, or when you are looking for, a Project Manager? (Language? Language pairs? Country of residence? Experience with tools, etc.?)

Just a few ideas ... Mar 1, 2013

- (degree of) familiarity with different software for the management of translations, terminology and projects

- years of experience

- average size of previous budgets handled (words, languages)

- capability to provide quality assurance in certain language combinations

- experience with different customer branches (and respective requirements there)

Regards,

Anett

Thanks, Anett, great info. Can you go into any more detail on some of these?

Which specific software might be important to you and others?

If we were to create a pull-down menu of options/ranges to communicate the scale of projects managed, what categories might we create? (Ex. "I have successfully managed at least one project with (select experience in largest successful project to date): (1) Tens of thousands of words in one to five languages, (2) Tens of thousands of words in six to twelve languages, (3) Tens of thousands of words in more than twelve languages, (4) Hundreds of thousands of words in one to five languages, (5) Hundreds of thousands of words in six to twelve languages, (6) Hundreds of thousands of words in more than twelve languages, (7) One million+ words in 12+ languages.)

What do you mean by "capability to provide quality assurance in certain language combinations"? Do you mean that they would proofread personally? Or that they would oversee the QA process?

What, specifically, might "experience with different customer branches (and respective requirements there)" entail?

Thanks in advance?

Examples of software Mar 1, 2013

I'm thinking of TMS (Translation Management Systems) like SDL TMS, SDL WorldServer, SDL TeamWorks, Across, MemoQ, etc.

Hi again,

... well with the software for project management ... the specific ones that are out there for managing projects as an agency, I have worked with and know of Plunet Business Manager for Germany: http://www.plunet.com/de/?languageswitch=true&cHash=a0ab6a98c8943eacb4533b37ea921f34 ... See more

There is also TPBox: http://www.tpbox.com/cgi-bin/aec.cgi

There might well be dozens of other solutions around the world, that agencies work with to manage the business part of translation. Experience with them is a plus for project managers.

and then additionally options for all the other software that is used for translation (Trados, Deja Vue to name but a few) and terminology management

Then I indeed meant proofing ... sometimes proofing tasks are done by PMs themselves, sometimes only overseen ... depends on the organisation of the agency .... so this differentiation could be used for several options

Your suggestions with the different categories go in the right direction, as it provides a good impression of the previous professional experience, but I would separate it into languages overseen and amount of words, as some project managers handle all languages and others only specific ones (and then know much better about language specific subtleties and problems that may occur and how to preempt them etc.).

And then of course experience with different branches, as managing translations for the medical sector or large technical translations might involve a different approach to project management and different client expectations than for subtitling projects, creative marketing translation etc.

And familiarity with project management according to specific standards/DIN EN for the translation industry.
