Can anyone please recommend a simple and effective time tracking tool? I basically need it to clock time spent on projects, factor in cost per hour, and calculate total cost. There seem to be literally thousands available and I would like to narrow them down. Many thanks!

I've been using their free version for about 3 years now. http://www.paymo.biz/. Besides keeping track of the time worked on specific projects, they have this thing called Paymo Plus that tracks every single little thing you do all day on your computer, if you care. I don't use their online invoicing, just the time tracker.
I wish ProZ would integrate a similar time tracking system with their invoice ... See more I've been using their free version for about 3 years now. http://www.paymo.biz/. I appreciate your feedback. The tool looks nice. Can you enter in your rate per hour, and manage several clients?
As for ProZ's invoicing system, I've never used it since I have bookkeeping software, but a project-management / time-tracking tool would be very useful indeed!

You can make a "file" for each client, with their details, and set a rate for each job if you wish. I have set up myself as a "client" so I can keep track of such "projects" as daily administration, bookkeeping, and so forth. I started doing that before Paymo Plus (also free) came out. As I said, this shows everything you do all day on your computer. I haven't taken the time to figure out exactly how to use this.

Why don't you just use a spreadsheet and clock the time you spend on each job and then record it in your spreadsheet.

Keren - sounds like TSheets time tracker should work for you.... you can set the rate for each client and also it integrates with several bookkeeping softwares so it may have the ability to streamline your time tracking/accounting/invoicing process.

Thanks for the input everyone! I downloaded both Time Stamp and Paymo. Time Stamp is indeed the bare basics of what I need although Paymo has a much nicer interface and better features. I'm set to go now!
