Hi all,
I'm looking for a good translation project management/invoicing software for freelance translators and I would like to hear from people who use Translator's Office Manager. So far, I have found a lot of positive feedback on TO3000 but almost nothing on T.O.M.
I have downloaded both demo versions to get familiar with both of them but it'd be nice to hear for other people's experience of T.O.M.

I love TOM, it's easier if you're a freelancer who outsources only from time to time. It has a lot of interesting functions. I'ts user-friendly. I've found only pros for this programme.
I really prefer it over TO3000.

...but it seems to me that rather than paying 165 euros, you can do all this for nothing with just a little thought and work in MS Excel.
What am I missing?

I have tried and it has ended up in a mess. Maybe I should find a good MS Excel or "how to organise oneself" course though but I'd rather invest in a good invoincing tool, really...

I'd say. We are doing all our Company accounting in Excel with no problems whatsoever. You just have to learn how to enter formulas into cells and link cells in various Excel sheets between themselves (so as when you enter something into one sheet, it automatically is changed in another). And Excel is much more easy to customize... IMHO. As to invoices- we do them manually, but as there are so many accounting/invoicing systems used (word-line count, min. charges, hourly rates- and all of them in... See more I'd say. IMHO. As to invoices- we do them manually, but as there are so many accounting/invoicing systems used (word-line count, min. charges, hourly rates- and all of them in one invoice), I don't see how it can be automated.
With TO3000, and I assume with TOM as well, the invoicing process is automated, and several jobs/projects--with different rates and services, can be added to the same invoice with just a few clicks. The same thing could be done with Excel, but for some people using an invoice program takes less time, and also, it's easier to keep track of previous invoices.

TO3000 spares me about 15 minutes of my time per order, compared to previous (excel) times. This means for me ca 150 words more translated, in other words to 15 €. Believe me, this software is a money making machine.
The same applies of course to all tools. And this whining and groaning over how expensive everything is.... Have you ever seen a woodworker use his head to drive in nails, to spare the cost of a hammer? No? I guess not.
We'd better use our heads for other stuff, like translating, instead of diddling with Excel. It definitely pays better to translate than to figure out how to do invoicing etc in Excel.
I strongly urge anybody that sees Excel as the best thing since sliced bread to take a free one-month ride with TO3000.

Don't know. I've been trying to get around TO3000 for a month now with no success. Not sure if some of the features in trial version are disabled or I just can't find my way around, but it just doesn't work the way I would like it to. It looks very 'atractive' but I can't use it.
How much time do you think one needs to be able to use it? As I said, I like very much it's features (from what I've read about it) but to get it up and running seems to be a hard work.

It takes us about a minute to enter a new order into our Excel spreadsheet (some 10 fields- client, language combination, date received, date given to the translator, due date, wordcount, rate, wage formula in the translator's cell) and another minute to find the client's previous invoice in the folder "Invoices sent", open it, resave with the same name and next numerical number in the folder "Invoices unsent" and copy the file name, PO name, wordcount and rate there...
So 2, OK, ma... The thing about programs like TOM or TO3000 is that the whole invoicing process is automated. Even with several jobs for several clients at the same time, I don't think creating a new invoice takes me more than 1 minute. However, invoicing is not the only purpose of these tools, they have other features as well. Some people are happy doing things manually, but let me tell you, TO3000 has made my life--at least my professional life-- so much easier.

There is nothing wrong with economizing and making do with what is already on your computer. I wouldn't recommend people to buy any software package advertised on the market. I agree that there are many things that the everyday user can accomplish with Microsoft Office tools and a little imagination.
However, you also have to consider what you will get in return if you do buy software for your translation business. Since I started using the Internet regularly, I have seen the term ROI (Return on Investment) again and again.
Think of all the money you could save if you didn't own items like a washing machine, a microwave oven and a car, to name a few. I'm sure that there are ways that you could live without them if you put your mind to it.
Nevertheless, no one argues about the usefulness of these items. They make our lives easier and more productive. I think translators should apply this thinking toward their business. A few hundred Euros is nothing compared to the thousands of Euros and satisfaction gained from running a professional, streamlined business.
For those of you who are unsure about how to tackle translation Office 3000, I have plenty of advice. Instead of posting it here, I invite you to contact me, and I will be more than happy to send you a link to an article I wrote.

I just downloaded the latest version of TO3000 and spent a couple of hours with it. I know that it will make my life much easier. And no, it's not just invoicing, it's tracking what I have outstanding, how much work I could accept, etc. It looked great to me. I think that we need to think bigger. Yes, I also currently do my invoices in Excel. But why would you try to do all the reporting you can get from T03000 with excel or access? You can get lots of historical information. I'm a newbi...
