Hi
Forgive me for my ignorance...
I understand a 'spotting list' consists of: time in, time out and a text to translate...
Is this, e.g. a Word document, with which you can work out the number of seconds for each segment of script? I imagine that you would have to make your translation 'fit' the time period for that segment.
What would be the appropriate way of specifying to a company that you offer this type of translation rather than a more... See more Hi

What would be the appropriate way of specifying to a company that you offer this type of translation rather than a more complex subtitling procedure?
Many thanks

If the company asks you just to translate, either example one or two, that's OK for you.
But, if you have to SUBTITLE a DVD or whatever, example 2 is no good. (You'll have to take out WENDY TO DOG, 1.15, 1-1, and probably convert feet into seconds. A lot of trouble).
The problem is: producers don't know what a spotting list is, incredible. They simply send you the complete script. A lot a work to do with them, I can surely say it to you. That's my job.
Luck. ▲ Collapse | | | kmtext สหราชอาณาจักร Local time: 18:53 ภาษาอังกฤษ + ... You'd have to specify subtitle translation | Aug 11, 2008 |
As Juan said, many producers don't know exactly what a spotting list is and will send a transcript of a programme instead.
I'd suggest that if you're approaching companies as a subtitle translator, you should specify that and make it clear that you want to translate subtitles as opposed to transcripts. It's much easier to work from an edited translation template than from a full transcript, even if it does have full timecode information, but always ask for a video file too for reference. ▲ Collapse | | | Kate Warren สหราชอาณาจักร Local time: 18:53 ภาษาสเปน เป็น ภาษาอังกฤษ + ... A matter of being specific | Aug 26, 2008 |
Kate, I think you could say that you translate subtitles, and not that you translate [from] video for subtitling.
This sounds perfectly clear for me, however considering our colleagues' coments, maybe your prospects wouldn't notice the difference. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » What exactly is a 'spotting list'?
