Hi Guys,

Does anyone know how to convert subtitles in XML format?

I use Subtitle Workshop, with which I can upload an Mp4 video, but cannot save as xml format.

A client asked for these requirements and I am not sure if they are correct or how to do it:

INPUT file: English video (Mp4 format) with no time coding
OUTPUT file: XLM subtitle feed (based on a sample sent by customer) with time coding

I came across a posting for this job on the Yahoo group ombrelettriche. I understood it to mean that an .mp4 video file would be provided which would have a sound track from which the person taking on the job was to transcribe the text to form subtitles which were to be presented in an XML format stipulated by the client.

Lacking anything better, I think it should well be possible to convert simple line by line text subtitles to an XML format with a plain text editor with good regex... See more

... both inputs, SubRip seems to be the answer:

It's a bit tough to set it up properly for OCR, though.

Maybe a conversion will be required from MP4 to AVI, if it doesn't handle MP4.

Afterwards, from SRT to XML you'll have to find your way.

Robert, I was referring to the translation+subtitling part of the job, not the transcription. In any case Regular Expressions are not my best friends so I would not want to go for that solution. Thanks for the idea though!

I followed your link and then researched some more to find out xml is a one of the formats used for subtitles in flash videos, but I would need to by a converter:

But I am not a programmer, I am a language and culture specialist so will would go for the first option, but will have to investigate some more.

The job I was looking at on ombrellectriche does not involve translation (so don't know that we should be discussing it on ProZ.com). It was a matter of providing English subtitles for an English soundtrack:

...di trascrivere e sottotilare IN INGLESE. Il file di input è un video in inglese (Mp4), il file di output è un file XML (basato su un template del cliente).


One might ask whether the subtitles are to be time based or frame based and how much formatting is required. If they are time based and require virtually no formatting then, of course, one could go ahead and create an .srt file.

It says they require the subs as an XML file. XML is essentially a data storage system which can have an infinite number of formats. If it's an XML format that is already in general subtitle use (admittedly at this instance I don't know of any) then why don't they specify it? Why do they want the spotter(time-coder)/transcriptionist to create the XML file? If they are so set on their XML format have they not written conversion programs from other formats to theirs? Without a conversion program I don't see that there's any way but to use some sort of editor.

One might also ask how they are going to supply the .mp4 file. Would a Blu-ray player be needed?
