I am looking for a free trial, no rentals, for stl or .890-files.
Not just the text editor, I need to see the video.

Have you tried Subtitle Workshop? I find it even more convenient than Media Subtitler.

Subtitle Workshop is much better for subtitling, however now and then it has issues with some video formats and codecs upon playing. I mean the good, finished v2.51; unless I'm mistaken v4 is an unfinished rewrite.

I understood Maker just wanted to watch videos with STL subtitles, possibly to review them.

I've given above the link to Urusoft's all products page, incliding ViPlay, which - from the description - might serve her needs too, though AFAICR I've never tried it.

You can get a fully functional one-month trial. It works perfectly with the formats you need and many more, along with the video, of course.
