I'm not sure this is the correct forum for my query. If not please move it.
I have an old laptop given to me by a relative. A few days ago it crashed badly - error messages about files missing, active desktop showing, but no cursor and I was unable to move around with the tab button.
Not having a CD (Windows Me) or start up disc I had to take it to my local (very nice) computer people. They fixed it, but if cost hard earned money.

Not having a CD (Windows Me) or start up disc I had to take it to my local (very nice) computer people. They fixed it, but if cost hard earned money.
Since the person I got the laptop from is somewhat disorganised, I have no way of getting hold of the Me CD or a start up disc. If this happens more than once, it could get expensive.
My solution (?) is to install Windows 98 on the laptop since I do have a CD. (I don't dare install my Windows XP, because I need that CD in case (knock on wood) my main computer gets a problem.
Question to all you computer savvy people who frequent ProZ: are there any problems/dangers with installing 98 on a computer with Me (which is newer/later)?
If so, which are they and are there any workarounds.
Thanks in advance,
Madeleine

Me won't let you install a previous version over it, it might work for a more recent version but not a previous one.
I once tried (98 over Me like here) - as I first couldn't find the way to format. Some files were corrupted and as I had Me as an update version of 98 I had to reinstall 98 first to restore Me afterwards.

The main problem that you could encounter would be finding the right way to format, you probably haven't got a floppy disk reader on the laptop (in my case,it is a desktop but the floppy reader was dead).
And you can't format from Me itself without the cd (in my case, the update cd didn't have the boot features).
You'll need to get into the bios at startup to have the computer boot on the cd reader.
Then locate the "format" command on the W98 cd - you should find the path on the cd before starting the process, as the "dos" commands won't be available (you're still with Me on the computer, that's the trick ).
Of course during the process the keyboard will work as an English keyboard, which is a big mess if you're not used to (particularly as the printed characters do not correspond).
Reinstalling after that is a piece of cake, but make sure that you have all the drivers at hand.
I may have forgotten something, I've done this last time 2 months ago and I may not remember everything (this old computer is with my son now and with all the crap that a teenager puts into a computer it needs to be formatted more than once in a while).

Just what I thought, only I wasn't sure about moving 'backwards'.

I would love to Marc, only I'm a coward. It seems too hard/dangerous for a non-nerd.
I do have more knowledge than your average coputer user - course in web design, course in 'basic' Java programming and with my last computer (98), I was formatting and reinstalling on a daily (almost) basis.
If you can guide me through it, I might consider taking the jump...
Thanks,
Madeleine

Since you're going to wipe the hard drive anyway, there's no danger.
As far as it being hard is concerned, check out this site:
http://www.linux-laptop.net/
- particularly the links to other people's experiences with the same model laptop as yours.
Also check out my Linux HowTos here on Proz.com.
As a starter, I recommend the SuSE and Knoppix Live distributions, which can be downloaded free of charge and will run from CD. This will give you some idea of how well your laptop hardware is supported without further tweaking on your part, besides giving you a taster of what it is like to use Linux. If after doing that you're still interested, try installing a couple of distros to your hard drive. Most distros can be ordered on CD (legally) for a couple of $. Good places to get advice are
community.compuserve.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?webtag=ws-linuxforum
www.desktoplinux.com
groups.yahoo.com/group/linuxfortranslators
Good luck!

Thank you for your advice Oddie. Thought I already posted a reply, but (not being Platinum) it takes some time before my postings are posted.

Just what I feared.

The laptop does have a floppy disc reader, but as I mentioned I haven't got a floppy disc.

I'll try this. Although my current keyboard is Swedish, I'm used to English (UK) keyboards and know where to find sqaure brackets etc.

My son is only 10, but he was the last one on the laptop before it crashed... By the time he's a teenager I hope he'll be a computer wizard/nerd.

Yet another reason for using Linux. You can set up multiple user accounts which are unable to access each other's data or otherwise damage, corrupt or infect each other, and with dedicated settings (e.g. allow Internet access or not).

...whatever you decide, that's my personal advice!
My laptop had ME and I had heavy problems since the beginning. Finally, two years ago it crashed completely and the computer technician told me that ME was "the worst operating system Microsoft ever created" and that I would never fix the problem unless I would change operating system.
Since then I have Windows 2000 and am very happy with it.

If you buy Crossover Office (approx. $40), you can run MS Office and Wordfast on Linux. Adobe Reader 7.0 is also available for Linux.

I have nothing against Linux, but I will advise you to tread with care while deciding on choosing Linux. Linux is an entirely different way of doing things. Things like Outlook Express, MSWord, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and many other familiar Window-based software will not work with Linux, there are parallel Linux-based softwares for all these, which also you will have to install, and also learn how to use them.

Also files on the linux system are not compatible with the Windows system. So if you create a file on the linux system, you will not be able to read it in the Windows platform, without cumbersome conversions, and vice versa.
Since you already have a Window-based desktop system, you will end up two incompatible systems, and since you have said that you are not a computer-nerd, you are likely to go completely off the rockers!
My advise is stick with Windows, installing Windows 98 is not a big issue at all, nor is formatting a hard disk.
If you have access to a computer running Windows 98 that has a floppy drive, you can create a bootable floppy disc in a minute or two, using which you can easily format the hard disc of the laptop and install Windows 98 in about half an hour.

Greetings.
Suggest that you forget Win Me and 98 => install MS Win 2000 or Win XP (better and more stable) if your laptop can install and run that OS (mostly in terms of its CPU and available RAM).
If convenient, also install/upgrade your MS Office to 2000, XP or 2003 version. Result would be that you would have a better productivity suite.

Not true. All the applications listed here run on Linux on Crossover Office. Details at www.codeweavers.com.
Also files on the linux system are not compatible with the Windows system. So if you create a file on the linux system, you will not be able to read it in the Windows platform, without cumbersome conversions, and vice versa.
Again, not true. HTML files on Windows are the same as HTML files on Windows. You can read, edit, print, etc. MS Word files in OpenOffice.org, Textmaker or Abiword. Ditto Excel files in OpenOffice.org, Planmaker or Gnumeric. Ditto Powerpoint files in OpenOffice.org. You can use the Linux version of Adobe Acrobat 7.0 to read exactly the same files as its Windows counterpart. And so on, and so forth.
Since you already have a Window-based desktop system, you will end up two incompatible systems
Once again, not true. It is even possible, should you choose to do so, to divide your hard drive into three partitions: one for Windows, one for Linux, and one for your data, i.e. your translations etc. You can choose whether to use Windows or Linux each time you start up the laptop, and use whichever you have chosen to access the data on the third partition. Exactly the same files.

I do have an XP CD taking up space in my bookshelf, only I might need it for my main PC (aka as my lifeline). When I bought my desktop, XP was installed, by the shop, with another CD since they had problems sourcing an English version of XP for me. That means I could use my XP CD for my laptop. Only ... if anything malfunctions on my desktop (aka as my lifeline), I need that CD. So, unless I want to spend X amount of money, this is not an option.

Not a problem, I've got an MS Office 2000 CD (produced before MS decided to make life a pain for people with more than one computer.
