English term (edited): the on-load battery volts [= voltage] must be recorded
Selected

il convient de relever mensuellement la tension de la batterie sous charge

There is a danger of introducing an ambiguity in French, since 'sous charge' could mean (and is used to mean!) both 'on load' and 'on charge'

So if the rest of the context does not resolve this ambiguity, it may be necessary to re-phrase so as to be 100% clear.

In fact, perhaps the simplest way of eliminating, or at least reducing, the risk of ambiguity might be to change the word order:

'..la tension sous charge de la batterie'

At least that way, the first way you'd naturally read it would be the right way!

neutral wolfheart : pour être vraiment clair il faut dire batterie en service

Thanks, Wolfheart! I think, sadly, that still retains a degree of ambiguity..
agree Philippe Etienne : D'après la suite de la phrase, on recharge la batterie si sa tension sous charge (impédance) tombe sous 85V

Merci, Philippe ! En effet, je crois que c'est assez clair...

les valeurs en volts de la batterie en charge doivent être enregistrées
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : No! 'batterie en charge' unambiguously means 'being charged' — the exact opposite of the meaning required here.

la tension de la batterie en charge doit être relevée tous les mois

Tony, en charge=on load, et pas seulement being load (d'après le GDT).
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Yes, I know Jock, but if you check out the refs. on the internet, and look carefully into the way they are being used, the vast majority use 'en' in the sense of 'on charge' and not 'under load' Mistrust GDT for such tech. niceties, it's full of gaffes!

After having a closer look, I'd say you're right Tony.
