English term

thermal blackout

English to French Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) stores et tissus
The insulated shades, with a single insulating layer, and thermal blackout shades, with triple insulating layers, can reduce the energy lost through a window up to 35%, having a significant effect on energy consumption used to heat or cool a home. The thermal blackout shades also block more than 99% of natural light and are perfect for bedrooms or other locations where darkness is desired.

Tony M Jul 29, 2010:
Sounds dodgy to me Feels like a too-literal word-for-word attempt
FX Fraipont (X) Jul 29, 2010:
assombrissant Non, pas du tout
"blackout" c'est "occultation" : il ne passe plus aucune lumière - puis "store thermique assombrissant", ce ne me semble pas être du très bon français.
Julie Martineau (asker) Jul 29, 2010:
selon le glossaire du client store "thermique assombrissant"
Qu'en pensez-vous ?
Tony M Jul 29, 2010:
Nota bene 1) 'shades' in US EN can mean either 'blinds' or curtains' in UK EN — so this could possibly be 'stores' or '(doubles) rideaux' — need to check with wider context

2) 'blackout' used here is not merely 'marketing language', it does have a quite specific technical meaning, and in this case, means that these devices do more than just block out the light; they also block out a large amount of heat as well. Cf. 'radio blackout', 'news blackout', etc.

Sounds like a "marketing name" Short of being a trade name, they chose the "blackout" term to allude to the effect. Can be translated into anything that makes sense - it is more of advertising phrasing than of meter translation - something with "jealousie", "chaleur" and "arret" (or stop).
GILLES MEUNIER Jul 28, 2010:
La question devrait être thermal blackout shades
kashew Jul 28, 2010:
blackout shades - with thermal qualities Can someone do that in French?

stores occultants isolants

pour "thermal blackout shades"

Pour moi c'est syn de "insulating", c'est tout.

"store occultant ARF
(...)
- réduit la chaleur à l’intérieur de la pièce
- limite les pertes de la chaleur en hiver"

agree Tony M : Yes, though do note one of my clients makes the specific distinction between blocking light or heat

I understand, Tony, but if you have "occultant" and "isolant" for the same product in the same expression, then there is little ambiguity: "isolant" is bound to refer to heat or cold. Isn't it ...?

neutral GILLES MEUNIER : Ce sont les volets roulants qui offrent une protection thermique dans le lien et non les stores d'occulation....

agree Tony M : Yup, that's the term my FR client uses, 'occultant', and with 'thermique' when it is heat rather than light; as for 'shades', it's hard to know which translation to use for this US term; it could simply be 'rideaux'; more context needed

stores d'obscurcissement

Comme pour blackout curtains !

Grand Dictionnaire Terminologique :

blackout curtains = rideaux d'obscurcissement
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I think that 'obscurcissement' really only applies to light; 'blackout' used in this sense really only has the sense of a (virtually!) total block (as distinct from mere slight attenuation) — cf. 'radio blackout', 'news blackout', etc.
