Please note that a 'sting' is short musical 'jingle' or similar used to underscore a particular moment in a programme etc.
I don't know if an official term exists in FR, but I have occasionally encountered the EN term used even in FR.

: 'sting' is not a verb here; a 'sting' is a short musical 'jingle' if you like that signals something — like the appearance of the villain in a pantomime, or the discovery of the murder weapon in an Agatha Christie film — or 'important breaking news'

Générique / bande son
"Générique" is how we call the musical sequence at the begining of a TV show (for ex, the "I'll be there for you" sequence in Friends)
"Bande son" is more général, it can be any musical sequence.
"Motif musical" doesn't sound right in my little French ears

: It's certainly not the 'générique' (= 'title music' in EN), this is quite distinct from that, a very specific notion. I think 'bande son' is also much too general

I know I am sure of the meaning, but would still gor for bande ou ambiance musicale

: But Emilie, that's the whole point: it is not a 'fond', this is a special, short, up-front bit of (usually) music that tells the audience something is about to happen, etc. etc.
