German term

freies Hochdrehen

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Motorcycle ad
"Eine GS [Gelände/Strasse, ie on- and off-road] für neue Wege. Alle Wege dieser Welt. Für die neue XXX [make and model] ist jedes Terrain ideal, jede Herausforderung pure Fahrfreude. Mit einem hochentwickelten Fahrwerk und dem neuen optionalen Dynamik ESA sind Sie auf allen Strecken zuhause. Erleben Faszination dort, wo Sie es wollen. Souveräner Durchzug, satter Sound, *freies Hochdrehen* – der Motor ist Performance, überlegen und elegant zugleich."

I know that Hochdrehen is to rev, or operate at high revs, but I'm not sure what "frei" means here. I thought it might mean "stepless", but Googling doesn't seem to support that.

Thanks in advance for your help; British English please.

Discussion

Nicole Islinger Oct 26, 2012:
freies Hochdrehen ... "drehfreudig" is correct. "Freies Hochdrehen" looks like it comes from a machine translation.
Steve Kerry Oct 25, 2012:
drehfreudig ... like it Bernd - we also use "rev-happy" in English, but that's a bit colloquial for advertising, although you would get it in motorcycle road tests.
Bernd Runge Oct 25, 2012:
freies Hochdrehen ... ... sounds like a translation. I'd call it drehfreudig ...
philgoddard (asker) Oct 25, 2012:
Steffen This is a marketing text, but the terminology I'm asking about is automotive.

free revving

Sounds like free-revving to me Phil, as reader of many motorcycle road tests... i.e. doesn't complain at high revs when you are thrashing it! Bit like my Honda in fact...
Note from asker:
Ah, yes, that looks like it. I tried "free revs", but I should have thought of revving, and I wasn't familiar with the phrase till now.Thanks.
