Bonsoir, comment comprenez-vous l'idée de "look behind" ?

Meaning of “Beneficial Owner”
A person who ultimately enjoys the benefit of an asset, as opposed to the legal owner who may only be a nominee. Looks behind the owner of the title to an asset to find the "true owner".

small detail of not so small importance! There is an implied beginning of the sentence:
[This concept of "benefical owner"] looks ....behind the owner of the title to an asset to find the "true owner".

Do note... ...this particular construction uses 'looks' (3rd person singular) and not 'look' (2nd person imperative): it is an odd construction that certainly would not be able to be rendered too literally; the sense is "this term [B.O.] is used to describe the situation looking beyond the apparent owner to see who is the real (benefitting) owner" — so on the face of it, one might imagine that the term was looking at itself, but that's not quite the case.

One often says 'regarder derrière soi' for looking behind but in French it is more commonly used, talking about someone else, to say 'to look over the person's shoulder'.

that is exactly what I explained :-) 'Regarde par dessus l'épaule du détenteur d'un titre pour savoir qui en est le véritable propriétaire.' would me my preference. It gives exactly the image of the situation.

I'm not sure if this formulation could be made to work in FR, but I do think it is important to carefully note the full meaning of the EN source text, and be wary of a too-literal translation.

neutral writeaway : so beyond (au-delà) isn't right after all and derrière has its merits? /I agree that au-delà is completely wrong here. This very literal translation may need tweaking by French natives but this is clearly what the English says

'beyond' may be right in some constructions, not all; here, I've sought to suggest a quite different approach, where I think 'au-delà' would sit awkwardly in FR.
