: Though do note that it is not the imperative as you have suggested, but rather, the 3rd person singular indicative. Please see my discussion comments above and suggestion below.

il figure derrière
il figure (ou il se situe) derrière le titulaire d'un titre de propriété pour trouver le "véritable propriétaire".

Tony M
: The term 'B.O.' looks behind / beyond / past the apparent owner to describe who is the real owner. Your suggestion would change the meaning of the source text too much.

pourquoi pas ? sur un acte juridique, il figure en seconde position

: derrière is the right word imo. behind is definitely not past or beyond. ;-)/gangbusters.

Lorraine Dubuc
: one wants to find out who is the true owner of the asset. In your sentence you start with he is located behind whereas the idea is looking over somenone's shoulder to see behind him who the real owner is. At least that is my understanding of it.

Daryo
: it is the same general idea, but it's not how it was expressed in the ST. // the point of using a "nominee" is that the real owner is NOT mentioned at all in public registers (pas en seconde position, mais en zéro position - position absente)

regarder par dessus l'épaule
One often says 'regarder derrière soi' for looking behind but in French it is more commonly used, talking about someone else, to say 'to look over the person's shoulder'.

Looks behind the owner of the title to an asset to find the "true owner".
Regarde par dessus l'épaule du détenteur d'un titre pour savoir qui en est le véritable propriétaire.
Example sentence:
En regardant par dessus son épaule je vis les gens qui l'accompagnaient

: Ah OK, I see what you mean now! But I don't think the image is very good for this purely figurative usage. / Yes, but it is the term 'B.O.' that is doing the looking... and ideas don't have shoulders ;-)

that is exactly what I explained :-) 'Regarde par dessus l'épaule du détenteur d'un titre pour savoir qui en est le véritable propriétaire.' would me my preference. It gives exactly the image of the situation.

English term (edited):
looks behind
cherche / examine ... qui est derrière le...
I'm not sure if this formulation could be made to work in FR, but I do think it is important to carefully note the full meaning of the EN source text, and be wary of a too-literal translation.
Peer comment(s):

Daryo

Thanks, Daryo! I think people are perhaps not familiar with this sort of construction with 'looks...'

: so beyond (au-delà) isn't right after all and derrière has its merits? /I agree that au-delà is completely wrong here. This very literal translation may need tweaking by French natives but this is clearly what the English says

'beyond' may be right in some constructions, not all; here, I've sought to suggest a quite different approach, where I think 'au-delà' would sit awkwardly in FR.
