This is a text describing a project to tackle the discrimination and stigma faced by gay men, transvestites and sex workers. I pretty much understand what is meant by this phrase, that stigma functions as a mark of society's judgement or view of a certain activity. Or a label, perhaps. But I'm struggling to come up with a concise, coherent phrase in English that conveys this idea.
The phrase is part of this paragraph, country is Argentina:
'La discriminación se agrava cuando se realizan actividades marginales, comportamientos que caen en el estigma, que funciona como marca valorativa social, que escapan a la norma y a los criterios generalizantes de lo percibido socialmente como “normal”.'
so far, I have: Discrimination is exacerbated when individuals take part in marginal activities, in behaviour which is subject to stigma, which functions ....

You're very welcome, Lucy :) Fully agree that "valorativa" is the trickiest bit to incorporate meaningfully, but I do believe "labelling/branding" does it in English. Thought about this for ages earlier, and read up on it lots, and this was the conclusion I came to... "Fringe" is also a good option; I felt "marginal" was lacking because I feel the intended tone is more "seedy/sordid" (in a PC kind of way), so felt "unconventional" could cover that. Anyway, best of luck!

| thanks James, yes I'd been thinking that myself - incorporating 'valorativa' in a meaningful way is probably the hardest part, and I think the idea of evaluation/values is sort of tied up with labelling/branding. Good point about 'marginal', too... I'd automatically gone for the cognate since I was busy focusing on the rest of the phrase. Perhaps 'fringe' would do it... I'll research some more. |
